Hourly equivalent = annual base salary ÷ 52 ÷ weekly hours. It is a comparison rate, not an award classification or guaranteed hourly entitlement. The take-home estimate uses resident income tax, standard individual Medicare levy and optional HELP/STSL under the assumptions on the methodology page.

Why 38 hours per week?

Under the National Employment Standards, the maximum weekly hours for a full-time employee are generally 38 hours unless reasonable additional hours apply, and awards or agreements can set or average ordinary hours differently. That is why the calculator starts at 38 but keeps the field editable.

Hourly equivalent is only the first comparison

Contract and casual rates can need a higher hourly amount to compensate for differences in paid leave, super, insurance and other employment benefits. Use the salary-package and take-home tools alongside the hourly equivalent when comparing offers.
